University Presented Awards Acadia Sports Hall of Fame The purpose of the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame is to recognize those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the athletic program at Acadia University and who, as a result of their contribution, have enhanced the image and reputation of the University. Bishop's Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player Brad Jones Award - Bishop's Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Year The men's basketball newcomer of the year award is named after Brad Jones who was a member of the 1967 Quebec champion Gaiters. Later on he became a generous benefactor of the team helping to finance trips, uniforms and team meals. Michel Fontaine Memorial Award - Bishop's Men's Basketball Most Improved Player The trophy for most improved men's basketball player is named in memory of Michel Fontaine. Michel was a student manager from Mansonville, Quebec who died of cancer at age 21 in 2004. He loved everything about Bishop's University, was frosh King and went to the Bishop's Gaiters Basketball Camp as a youngster. He had a wonderful attitude and was always willing to help someone. Garth Smith Award - Bishop's Men's Basketball The men's basketball Garth Smith Award was formerly the team award. It was renamed to recognize Garth's 24 years at the helm of the Gaiters basketball program. He led Bishop's to a pair of conference championships and developed many great people. Brandon University Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall of Fame Brandon Male Athlete of the Year - R.J. McCarthy Award Jim Casey Award - Brandon Athletics The award is presented annually to the male student athlete that best demonstrates athletic ability, academic performance, leadership and sportsmanship. Carleton Volunteer Coach Award Concordia University Sports Hall of Fame Dr. Robert J. Brodrick Award - Concordia Male Athlete of the Year This prestigious award is presented to the outstanding male athlete at Concordia University. The recipient must have made a strong contribution to his team's success, demonstrated athletic prowess, leadership and a commitment to excellence. He must be in good academic standing. Concordia Male Rookie of the Year This award is presented to the outstanding male student-athlete who is competing in his first year of CIS and/or conference eligibility in a varsity sport. The student-athlete must be 21 years old or younger as of Jan. 1 during the competitive year. The recipient must have made a strong contribution to his team's success and be in good academic standing. Concordia Fittest Male Athlete Ron Lapointe Award - Concordia Leadership This award is presented annually to the male student-athlete who best exemplifies outstanding achievement in three areas: as a student, an athlete and community involvement. The award honours the memory of Cascades rower Jen Simpson, who died tragically in a car accident in 2008 at the age of 20. Her parents and friends have established this annual award in her name. A minimum cumulative GPA of 70%, evidence of superior athletic achievement, and leadership are required criteria. The President's Award is given to an athlete in their fourth or fifth year of eligibility. The athlete must have represented the U of R in competition in both the fall and winter semesters of the past season (with the exception of football and soccer). Regina Male Athlete of the Year The University of Regina Male Athlete of the Year is awarded to the student-athlete with a minimum cumulative GPA of 60% that best demonstrates outstanding athletic ability and leadership during the season. The athlete must have represented the U of R in competition in both the fall and winter semesters of the past season (with the exception of football). Regina Male Rookie of the Year The University of Regina Male Rookie of the Year is awarded to a student-athlete in his first season of CIS eligibility with a minimum cumulative GPA of 60% that best demonstrates outstanding athletic ability and leadership during the season. The athlete must have represented the U of R in competition in both the fall and winter semesters of the past season (with the exception of football). Craighead Trophy (Male Greatest Contribution to Interuniversity Sport) Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year Claude LaJeunesse Award - Academics Ryerson Men's Basketball Team MVP Saint Mary's Sport Hall of Fame Saint Mary's Male Athlete of the Year Saint Mary's President's Award Saint Mary's Male Rookie of the Year Saint Mary's Men's Basketball Team MVP Saint Mary's Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year Saint Mary's Men's Basketball Coach's Award Saint Mary's Unsung Hero - John Jones Award E. Kent Phillips Trophy Male Athlete of the Year The E. Kent Phillips trophy is named in honour of Kent Phillips who was both an athlete and coach at the University of Saskatchewan. Phillips excelled in both rugby and hockey. As a coach, he led the Huskies to four consecutive rugby titles in the 1930s. Prior to 1989, this award was only given to an outstanding male athlete of a team sport. Rusty MacDonald Cup All-Round Male Athlete The Rusty MacDonald Cup has been given given to male athletes since 1939. Rusty MacDonald played on the Huskie football team as a centre and middle linebacker. He was also a champion diver and involved in student government. The Cup is awarded to an upper year male student-athlete who during his entire career as a Huskie exhibited the highest qualities of sportmanship and citizenship. Howard Nixon Trophy Male Rookie of the Year Howard Nixon was a longtime faculty member in the College of Physical Education. He was the coach of both the Huskie football and wrestling programs, before being named the first Dean of the College of Physical Education. Until 1988, the Howard Nixon Trophy was given to the Most Outstanding Male Tournament Athlete. Colb McEwon Trophy Coach of the Year Colb McEwon was a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, who began with athletics on campus as the 1932 men's basketball coach. While in the position, he led the Huskies to eight straight Western Intercollegiate Championships. He was also the driving force behind the building of the on-campus curling rink and in the establishment of the Saskatoon Hilltops football club. University of Saskatchewan Athletic Hall of Fame The University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame provides recognition to those outstanding individuals and teams, who have not only demonstrated excellence in their athletic endeavours, but also have brought distinction to the University. SGWU Male Athlete of the Year - Gill Trophy SGWU Men's Basketball MVP - Manolakos Trophy SGWU Men's Basketball Most Improved Player - Dick Thompson Trophy StFX Sports Hall of Fame The St. Francis Xavier University Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1976 and exists to honour those individuals who have contributed significantly to StFX sports as athletes, teams, or as builders. Those chosen inductees have exemplified the spirit and ideals of Xaverian athletics in their professional and community lives. StFX Male Athlete of the Year StFX Male Community X-Cellence Award StFX Men's Basketball Team MVP StFX Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year StFX Men's Basketball Most Improved Player StFX Men's Basketball Coach's Award StFX Men's Basketball Best Rebounder Trinity Western Murray Hall Leadership Legacy Award Bobby Gaul Memorial Trophy - UBC Graduating Male Athlete Bobby Gaul passed away at the age of 24 just before UBC opened for the 1935-36 session. His rugby and track teammates, deeply touched by this person of special qualities, immediately created a UBC award bearing his name - an award to the graduating male athlete who best combines the qualities of leadership and sportsmanship, attributes that made Bobby loved by everyone to whom he was known. UBC Sports Hall of Fame Bus Phillips Memorial Trophy - UBC Male Athlete of the Year Created to honour UBC's top male athlete of the year, the R.J. Bus Phillips Memorial Trophy is named after the elder statesman of the UBC Athletic Department who passed away at the age of 91 in 2006. The builder of athletic opportunity and tradition at UBC, Bus served as Director of Men's Athletics for 27 years, helping the athletic department become one of the strongest in the country and setting the stage for today's success. One of the founding fathers of both the modern Canada West Conference and the CIAU (now CIS), he raised the profile of Canadian university athletics and of UBC. UBC Male Rookie of the Year James Downey Shield - UNB Male Athlete of the Year Awarded to the top male athlete, it was named after the former university president. This award was formerly known as the Labatt's Shield. It is awarded to an outstanding male athlete who has demonstrated excellent leadership, a positive attitude and great skill during the past season. UNB Male Rookie of the Year Garnet Copeland Award - UNB Top All-Round Student Athlete The Garnet Copeland Medal, formerly the Kenneth Corbett Medal, was donated to UNB in 1954 by alumna Dr. Garnet Copeland. This award is bestowed upon the year's top all-round student athlete, taking into consideration the individual has shown excellence as an athlete, is a good citizen in the community, and is outstanding in a minimum of one varsity sport. UNB Brunswickan Award UNB James Born Award The James Born Award, named for the former Athletic Director, is presented to an individual who makes considerable contributions to the Reds athletic program. The recipient of this award could be an assistant coach, administrator, volunteer or supporter. UNB Coach of the Year This award, first presented in 2018, is awarded annually to the Reds coach of the year, as determined by the Dean of Kinesiology in conjunction with the Director of Athletics. UNBC Men's Basketball Most Inspirational Player UNBC Men's Basketball Practice Wins Leader UPEI Alumni Association Male Athlete of the Year UPEI Gordon & Muriel Bennett Award This award is presented to a male or female student-athlete who, over four years, best combined athletic achievement and academic excellence. UPEI Men's Basketball Mickey Place Award These awards are presented by the UPEI Student Union to varsity team student-athletes who made a contribution to student leadership on their team and on campus. The late John Thomas (Mickey) Place was a Student Union employee who was connected not only with UPEI athletics, but also with other aspects of campus life. These awards are given in his memory. University of Victoria Sports Hall of Fame University of Waterloo Athletic Hall of Fame The University of Waterloo Department of Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame honours individuals and teams who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program at the University of Waterloo Totzke Award (UW Outstanding Male Athlete) Awarded annually to the outstanding Warrior male for athletic skill, sportsmanship, citizenship, and academic proficiency, and for outstanding contribution to the athletic program at the University of Waterloo To Honour an Outstanding Athletic Career Awarded in 1965 to four athletes. Not known if ever awarded again. Hagey-Siegfried Trophy (Team MVP) The Hagey-Siegfried Trophy is awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player on the Waterloo Warriors Men's Basketball team Letterman Award (Rookie-of-the-Year) Rookie of the Year on the Waterloo Warriors Men's Basketball team Most Improved Player Award Started in 2003, this award recognizes player improvement on the Waterloo Warriors Men's Basketball team UW Community Service Award Waterloo Men's Basketball Impact Award Waterloo Shield of Excellence Award Federation of Students Rookie of the Year University of Waterloo Fans Pick Award Western Male Athlete of the Year The Male Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to a male student athlete who has achieved outstanding success representing Western at the provincial and/or national level in the current Intercollegiate season. Western Purple Blanket Award Purple blankets are presented to student-athletes, usually in their graduating year. Winners are based on their academic and athletic achievements and must have participated in athletics for a minimum of three years and must have earned a minimum of three first colours. Western Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy The Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy is presented to the Western male student athlete who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee has made the greatest contribution to Intercollegiate Athletics within the University. Laurier Don Smith Leadership Award Laurier Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award The Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award honours the male and female athlete who best combines academic and athletic achievement. Laurier Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year Award Laurier Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player Laurier Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year York Male Athlete of the Year York Lions Legacy Award York Coach of the Year York Male Rookie of the Year Charles Saundercook Memorial Trophy - York Sportsmanship The Charles Saundercook Memorial Trophy is presented to a student-athlete within the varsity athletics program who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, enthusiasm for life, and the consideration for others.
